Airborne wings were designed in 1941 by Captain William Yarborough, whose first sketch was rejected by the War Department for looking too much like pilot's wings. Master is the highest tier, marked with a star inside a laurel wreath above the canopy — earned only after years of qualifying jumps and leadership in an airborne unit.
