Born from tragedy: in February 1983, the cargo ship SS Marine Electric rolled over in the North Atlantic, killing 31 people — rescue helicopters arrived, but had no way to get exhausted sailors out of the water. That failure led directly to the Coast Guard's Rescue Swimmer program in 1985. Since then, only around 1,125 people have ever earned the title. Their motto: "So Others May Live."
