Before settling on the crossed Harpers Ferry pistols in 1922, the Army tried crossed billy clubs for MP insignia — but at saluting distance, they were indistinguishable from the Artillery's crossed cannons. A medieval mace didn't work either. Captain George Chandler finally proposed the old M1805 pistols, first made at the Harpers Ferry Armory starting in 1805 and famously carried by Andrew Jackson, including in an 1806 duel.
