Naval Aircrewmen earn their Gold Wings after completing their training pipeline and reporting to their first operational squadron — then have 18 months to qualify as a full Naval Aircrew Warfare Specialist. In 2009, the Navy upgraded it from a simple qualification badge to a full warfare designator, on par with Enlisted Aviation, Submarine, and Surface Warfare Specialist badges.
