The crossed arrows go back to the Army's Indian Scouts of the 1890s, and the dagger is the V-42 — the stiletto issued to the First Special Service Force in WWII, the joint American-Canadian unit Special Forces traces its lineage through. The branch itself wasn't established until 1987, more than three decades after the first Special Forces Group stood up.
