Born from tragedy: in February 1983, the cargo ship SS Marine Electric rolled over in the North Atlantic, killing 31 people — rescue helicopters arrived, but had no way to get exhausted sailors out of the water and into a basket. That failure led directly to the Coast Guard's Rescue Swimmer program in 1985. Since then, only around 1,125 people have ever earned the title. Their motto: “So Others May Live.”
