Activated August 16, 1942, the 101st had no combat record yet when its first commander, Gen. William Lee, told the new division it had "no history, but a rendezvous with destiny." The eagle on the patch — Old Abe — actually predates the division itself, tracing back to a Civil War mascot carried by an 8th Wisconsin regiment. That destiny arrived on June 6, 1944, when the 101st jumped into Normandy ahead of the beach landings.
