Most Navy sailors who earn the FMF badge are Hospital Corpsmen or Religious Program Specialists — the medics and chaplains permanently attached to Marine Corps units. Qualifying isn't a formality: it means serving with the Marines, passing their combat fitness test, and standing an oral exam on Marine Corps history, weapons, and tactics in front of FMF-qualified sailors. Notably, only a Marine Corps commanding officer can approve the designation — a Navy qualification that only the Marines get to sign off on.
