"Sapper" comes from the French sapeur, first organized as a distinct military engineering corps under Napoleon. Today's Sapper Tab traces to the modern Sapper Leader Course, developed 1982–85 at Fort Leonard Wood — 28 grueling days of demolitions, small-unit tactics, and combat engineering, with roughly a 60% pass rate. Their motto: "We clear the way."
