Activated in Vietnam in 1965, the 17th Aviation Group carried the nickname "Freedom's Eagles" and flew in 16 of the Army's 17 official campaigns of the war. After inactivation and reactivation in Korea in 1975, it was redesignated the 17th Aviation Brigade in 1987, flying CH-47 Chinooks, UH-60 Black Hawks, and C-12 Hurons in support of US Forces Korea until its own inactivation in 2005.
