Traces to Darby's Rangers, six battalions activated in WWII under Maj. William Darby, built through brutal selection that accepted roughly 600 of 1,600 volunteers. The regiment's motto, "Rangers Lead the Way," was born at Omaha Beach on D-Day, when a general shouted it at a lieutenant pinned down under fire.
