The 101st's eagle, Old Abe, predates the division, tracing to a Civil War mascot carried by an 8th Wisconsin regiment. Activated August 16, 1942, the 101st jumped into Normandy ahead of the beach landings on June 6, 1944. On a waving US Flag.
