"Old Ironsides" wasn't a planned name — in 1940, commander Bruce Magruder ran a contest for a division nickname after Patton named his own division "Hell on Wheels," got over 200 submissions he didn't like, then happened to glance at a painting of the USS Constitution he'd just bought and adopted its nickname on the spot.
