Known as "Carlson's Raiders" after commander Lt. Col. Evans Carlson, the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion made its name in the August 1942 Makin Island raid — celebrated widely enough that newspapers wrote them their own battle song. That November, they launched "The Long Patrol," a month-long guerrilla campaign through the jungles of Guadalcanal, fighting six major engagements before returning to friendly lines.
