During WWII, the regiment earned the nickname "Ghosts of Patton's Army" for its reconnaissance skill, appearing seemingly at will behind German lines as part of Patton's Third Army. Redesignated the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1948, it spent the next 44 years patrolling 731 kilometers of the Iron Curtain along the East German and Czechoslovakian borders.
