"Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and have come out steel!" General Winfield Scott gave the 3rd Cavalry Regiment its nickname and motto in 1847 after the Mexican-American War, a tradition kept alive today: enlisted troopers still greet officers by shouting "Brave Rifles," and officers reply "Veterans." Paired here with the Combat Action Badge, created in 2005.
