"Dustoff" became the universal call sign for Army air ambulance crews in 1963, and it meant help was coming no matter how hot the landing zone. The 498th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) activated in 1964 at Fort Sam Houston and deployed to Vietnam the following year, flying medevac missions under that same call sign. The unit returned stateside in 1971 and has been based at Fort Benning ever since.
