The 4th Marine Raider Battalion was created in October 1942 under an unusual commander: Major James Roosevelt, son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. All four Raider battalions were folded into the 1st Marine Raider Regiment in March 1943, and by early 1944 the unit's lineage carried forward into the reformed 4th Marine Regiment.
