"All American" wasn't the Army's idea — it came from a 1918 newspaper contest held with the Atlanta Georgian, chosen because the division was uniquely built from soldiers representing every one of the then-48 states. It became the first U.S. airborne division in 1942, and made the first airborne assault in American military history over Sicily in July 1943. Paired here with the Combat Infantry Badge, earned only by infantrymen who personally fought in active ground combat.
