Created March 19, 1980, the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist insignia is one of only four gold breast badges awarded to Navy enlisted sailors. It's not optional in practice: failing to earn it can bar a sailor from promotion to Petty Officer First Class, block reenlistment, or restrict them to shore duty. Earning it requires passing a written exam and an oral board, usually run by Chief Petty Officers or above.
