Nicknamed the "Smokey Bear hat" — but it's actually the reverse of what you'd think. The campaign hat itself dates to 19th-century frontier scouts; Smokey Bear, the cartoon forest-fire-prevention mascot, borrowed the hat's look in 1944, not the other way around. Drill sergeants started wearing it in 1964 specifically to stand apart from the recruits they're turning into soldiers.
