Every element of the MI branch insignia means something. The sun's eight rays represent Helios, who could see and hear everything; the four straight rays also mark the four points of the compass, for MI's worldwide mission. The rose above it is an ancient symbol of secrecy — placing the sun beneath it signals operations conducted under circumstances forbidding disclosure. The half-hidden, unsheathed dagger points to the danger built into the mission itself.
