The SAS parachute wings, designed by Lieutenant Jock Lewes, are based on the stylized sacred Ibis wings of the Egyptian sun god Ra — a design Lewes spotted in the décor of Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo. The dark and light blue color split carries a second meaning too: Lewes rowed for Oxford, and fellow founding member Lieutenant Langton rowed for Cambridge. Worn on the right shoulder once qualified, or moved to the left breast above medals after an operational combat jump.
