Nicknamed "The Budweiser" within the Navy, the Trident was established October 16, 1970 and first worn during the Vietnam War, replacing separate badges for UDT and SEAL operators. It went gold for everyone that year — officers and enlisted alike — specifically because both train side-by-side through BUD/S with no distinction by rank. Its four elements each mean something: the eagle for air, the anchor for the Navy itself, the trident for the sea, and the flintlock pistol for land combat. It can also be taken away — a commanding officer can pull a sailor's Trident for a loss of confidence in their performance.
