SOCOM was created in direct response to Operation Eagle Claw, the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran — the same failure that led to the 160th SOAR's founding. Activated April 16, 1987 at MacDill Air Force Base, SOCOM unifies special operations forces from every branch under one command. Embedded here in the US Flag.
