Formed in 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado — 9,200 feet up, nicknamed "Camp Hell" by the men who trained there — the 10th Mountain learned to ski, climb, and fight in conditions that grounded most other units. In February 1945, they made their name for good: a night climb up Italy's Riva Ridge, a cliff the Germans considered unclimbable and left undefended. Paired here with the Combat Action Badge, created in 2005.
