Nicknamed "The Wandering 11th," the 11th Infantry Regiment fought alongside the 5th Infantry Division through Normandy and Northern France before its defining battle at the Moselle River in September 1944 — three days holding a horseshoe-shaped pocket against repeated German counterattacks at Dornot. The regiment later assaulted the heavily fortified Fort Driant, only to be stopped by German tunnels and concrete works.
