Nicknamed the "Arctic Warriors," the 172nd traces its lineage to the WWII Aleutian Islands Campaign and spent decades based in Alaska as one of the Army's premier cold-weather units, pioneering Arctic survival techniques that shaped Army doctrine. In 2005, the brigade deployed to Iraq for 16 months — the longest deployment of any U.S. Army unit since World War II — before being reflagged in 2006.
