Nicknamed "Sky Soldiers," the 173rd was activated on Okinawa in 1963 and became the first major U.S. Army combat unit sent to Vietnam in 1965. On February 22, 1967, over 800 of them jumped into War Zone C during Operation Junction City — the only combat parachute jump of the entire Vietnam War. Deactivated in 1972, the brigade was reactivated in 2000 and remains NATO's only forward-stationed airborne brigade, based in Vicenza, Italy.
