Of 1,500 volunteers for the original Ranger Battalion in 1942, only 600 were selected — 80% of them from the 34th Infantry Division, the "Red Bulls." Activated June 19, 1942 in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland under Major William Darby, the 1st Ranger Battalion fought through North Africa and Italy before its lineage carried into today's 75th Ranger Regiment.
