Traces back to Darby's Rangers — six battalions activated in WWII under Maj. William Darby, built through brutal selection that accepted roughly 600 of 1,600 volunteers. The regiment's motto, "Rangers Lead the Way," was born at Omaha Beach on D-Day, when a general shouted it at a lieutenant pinned down under fire. Deactivated after WWII, reformed for Korea and Vietnam, and organized into today's 75th Ranger Regiment in 1986.
