The nickname wasn't originally theirs — in WWII Italy, German soldiers called the Americans wearing this patch "Red Devils" or "Red Bulls," and the name stuck so well the division adopted it officially, replacing its earlier WWI nickname, the "Sandstorm Division." The 34th racked up more days in combat than any other American division in WWII, and Army Ranger units trace part of their own formation back to soldiers pulled from the 34th.
