The 86th Infantry Regiment activated at Camp Hale, Colorado in 1942–43, assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and redesignated the 86th Mountain Infantry in late 1944. Like the rest of the 10th Mountain, they trained in brutal cold-weather conditions before fighting through the Italian Campaign. Paired here with the Combat Infantry Badge, awarded only to infantrymen who personally fought in active ground combat.
