ADA split off from the Artillery branch in 1968 and adopted "First to Fire" as its motto in 1986 — a direct reference to a speech Gen. Jonathan Wainwright gave to WWII antiaircraft veterans, praising them for being first to fire on the enemy at Pearl Harbor. Today the branch runs the Patriot missile system, THAAD, and other air and missile defense platforms.
