Nicknamed "The Ten Toughest Days in the Army," Air Assault School has a roughly 50% failure rate — and an origin story that undercuts its own reputation a little: when the first class graduated in 1974, nobody had actually ordered badges. A dentist assigned to the 101st, Major Jack Rickman, made the first five by hand out of spare dental fillings. The school moved fast to fix that, and the badge has been formally recognized ever since.
