Motto "Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere." The command was redesignated Air Force Special Operations Command on 22 May 1990, having begun as Twenty-Third Air Force, activated 1 March 1983. From Hurlburt Field, Florida, it serves as the Air Force component of US Special Operations Command at MacDill. The heritage runs further back than the patch: to the 1st Air Commando Group, flying over Burma from late 1943, and to the Carpetbagger crews who ran agents and supplies into occupied Europe through 1944 and 1945.
The emblem is the Air Force shield with the star and disc at the top, spread wings opening either side, and the special forces dagger down the center, point down. A scroll across the base reads AF Special Operations Command.
