Combines the Airborne Master badge — earned only after years of qualifying jumps, designed in 1941 by Captain William Yarborough — with the Purple Heart, the nation's oldest military decoration. George Washington created it in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, one of the first American honors given to enlisted soldiers rather than only officers. It fell out of use for 150 years before being revived in 1932, and since 1942 has been reserved specifically for those wounded or killed by the enemy.
