Combines Airborne jump wings — designed in 1941 by Captain William Yarborough after the War Department rejected his first sketch for looking too much like pilot's wings — with the Ranger tab, born from a battlefield accident. At Omaha Beach on D-Day, Gen. Norman Cota asked a lieutenant what unit he belonged to; told "Rangers," Cota shouted "Well, goddammit, Rangers, lead the way!" The phrase stuck as the Ranger motto ever since.
