Crossed sabers were adopted for cavalry insignia in 1851 — and for three months in 1858, the Army actually ordered Cavalry officers to wear them upside down, just to distinguish them from Dragoon officers wearing the same symbol right-side up. The Army gave up on that within months and standardized everyone edge-up instead. The Cavalry branch itself was folded into Armor in 1950.
