Medics weren't always recognized for what they faced. In WWII, one infantry unit took up a collection for their own medics, who "shared their dangers but not their pay" — a gap the Army closed in 1945 by creating the Combat Medical Badge. It requires the same thing the Combat Infantry Badge does: personal presence under fire, but earned while treating the wounded instead of engaging the enemy.
