The crossed field guns date to 1834 and depict 19th-century cannon — the branch kept the old guns in its insignia even as the weapons themselves changed beyond recognition. Field Artillery traces to November 17, 1775, is nicknamed "King of Battle" and "Red Leg" for the scarlet branch color, claims Saint Barbara as its patron, and is headquartered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In both World Wars it was the single highest casualty-producing weapons system on the battlefield.
