The technique itself is older than the badge that recognizes it — Green Berets with MACV-SOG made the first combat HALO jump into Laos in 1970, but the Military Freefall Parachutist Badge wasn't approved until 1994. Jumpers exit at 30,000+ feet and freefall to as low as 800 feet before opening — high enough to stay undetected, low enough to avoid a long, exposed ride under canopy.
