The Special Forces unit patch — an arrowhead representing Native American tracking and stealth skills, with a dagger for unconventional warfare and three lightning bolts for the ability to strike by land, sea, or air — embedded in the flag. First approved in 1955, the same year "De Oppresso Liber" (to free the oppressed) was adopted as the Special Forces motto. President Kennedy authorized the green beret itself in 1961.
