The brown on a Warrant Officer's insignia has real origins: in 1918, Army Mine Planter Service crews — the Army's own seagoing vessel operators — marked their rank with simple bands cut from brown burlap sacking. That became the official color of the Warrant Officer Corps, worn ever since as a mark of the Army's technical specialists.
