Founded in 1901, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment's "Blackhorse" nickname has an oddly uncertain origin — historians still debate whether it traces to the black horses the unit rode in its early years, or to a 1924 fire that blackened a nearby California town with soot. Its motto, "Allons" (French for "Let's Go"), has stuck through Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Iraq. Today the regiment serves as the Army's official Opposing Force at Fort Irwin, California, training visiting units by playing the enemy.
