The Master Gunner Identification Badge recognizes soldiers who complete one of the Army's master gunner certification courses. The crossed saber and musket represent the Armor and Infantry branches; the full badge also honors Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery. Approved in January 2018 with the final design settled on 31 January 2019, it was made retroactive all the way to 1 October 1975 — despite the position itself going back nearly 400 years.
