The Army adopted the caduceus — the winged staff with two entwined snakes — as its Medical Department insignia in 1902. It's often confused with the Rod of Asclepius, the single-snake staff that's the older medical symbol; the caduceus was historically associated with commerce and messengers, but a century of Army use has made it the symbol soldiers recognize.
