The Army has run watercraft for generations without a badge to show for it. That changed in October 2024, when the Mariner Badge was approved; the design was unveiled the following March. The levels are easy to read once you know what to look for — the Basic badge is the ship's helm on its own, Senior adds a wreath halfway up the sides, and Master carries the wreath all the way around. Each step is earned in sea time: one year aboard an Army vessel for Basic, five for Senior, ten for Master, with certification required at every level. The Army is the only U.S. branch that holds its mariners to full International Maritime Organization standards.
