Traces to 1944, when Lieutenant Prescott of the 9th Troop Carrier Pathfinder Group designed the original insignia. Pathfinders traditionally arrive ahead of everyone else, scouting drop zones and landing zones before the main force lands — the wings represent flight, and the torch traces back to the Olympic tradition of carrying fire ahead to light the way.
