Started as a Navy sleeve patch in WWII, becoming a breast badge by the late 1960s — and until 2004, the Army wore the exact same design as the Navy. That year, the Army redesigned its version as the Special Operations Diver badge, adding sharks for stealth and speed and crossed OSS-style fighting knives honoring WWII operational swimmers, splitting the two services' insignia for the first time.
